The Observer – Uganda’s first Buddhist monk
Many Ugandans travel to India for a university education expecting to return with a degree.
But what happens when a child returns in not three but seven years’ time, and not with a degree but as a Buddhist yogi?
This is the story of Venerable Bhikku Buddharakkhita, Uganda’s first and only Buddhist monk. Born in 1966 to a Catholic family as Steven Kaboggoza, he attended St Henry’s College Kitovu, but his pleasure in church began to wane as the school’s headmaster made church attendance compulsory, creating a spirit of rebellion in him.
